TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – This is Earth Week. A time focused on working to protect the future of our planet. Crown Battery in Fremont is part of that effort.
Batteries might not be the first thing you think of when it comes to recyclable products, but all crown batteries are made with 100% renewable energy. Company leaders say that’s an industry first. They also say sustainability and the environment are key parts of their business plan.
Crown has been in Fremont since 1926. The company makes a wide range of products for transportation, material handling and energy storage. John Connell is a Vice President with the company. “We’re a small company in a large global industry, and the actions we take and the decisions we make have an impact on the sustainability of our society. Our batteries are fully recyclable. They don’t go into landfills and they protect the ecosystem better than any other battery produced. The batteries we produce here in Fremont are the safest, most sustainable battery used in the world. Our lead batteries are 99.3% recyclable and they can be used continually after being broken down and recycled for generations. They are more recyclable than an aluminum can.”
Crown’s products can be found on six continents. They include everything from batteries for industrial equipment and diesel locomotives to golf carts, electric vehicles, and floor care equipment. The company also makes products for power grid systems.
Jyl Zeis is the Director of Human Resources. “When you think of green energy like solar and wind , we make a product that green energies store power in.”
Connell says the business continues to grow. ”We expanded the plant in the fourth quarter of 2021, and we’re building more products and we’ve hired more people to staff that line.”
And like so many others at Crown, being a good steward of the environment is personal to Jyl. “I have three children. I want to make sure that for generations to come, things that I am part of and what we are doing, do not negatively impact them. I want to have a positive impact on their world.”
Like a lot of businesses, Crown is hiring right now. The company is working to fill about 40 positions.
