County voters give nod to property tax changes

Wichita County voters joined their fellow Texans in overwhelmingly approving two state propositions aimed at lowering property tax burdens.

County residents approved Proposition 1 – 4,615 to 481.  It was a measure to cut school district taxes for homeowners 65 and older or disabled.

They also OK’d Proposition 2 – 4,613 to 523. It will raise the state’s homestead exemption for school taxes from $25,000 to $40,000.

Voters in Burkburnett were not so open to a set of propositions for bonds for road improvements, defeating all five soundly.

Also in Saturday’s vote, Lori Kemp was elected Burkburnett mayor along with Susan Mitchell and Michael Richter to seats on the City Commission. Robin Bachert won a seat on the Burkburnett school board.

Christina Neuamann and Fran Davis were elected to the Electra City Commission while Ray Shultz was elected mayor of Iowa Park and Jeff Pogatshnik woman a spot on the Iowa Park City Council.
